Short Course Truck

Here is the deal.  Most of us have never taken a class called ”Browsing 101″.  It’s a simple course which outlines the general dos and don’ts for productive browser searching.  Actually, that’s a lie because this course doesn’t really exist.  But if it did, you might just learn these simple browsing basics.  Here is the course outline.

#1        Don’t be vague…  Let’s assume you are looking for a specific gift.  Are you one of those people who types the word “gifts” in your favorite browser expecting to find a link to a site that sells precisely what you have in mind?  Of course you aren’t!  You know that your intended purchase is a fire engine because that is what your kid wants for his birthday.  So do you type “fire engine” into your browser?  Not on your life!  That would return 24 million Web site links for everything from what you really want to pictures of fire engines and to fire engine parts vendors.  That’s not what you want.  You need to be a bit more specific.

#2        Narrow your search…  You want a gift that’s a fire engine.  It also needs to be a child’s toy.  You want it to be bright red.  Maybe you want its ladder to move up and down, its hoses to actually squirt water and you certainly want its red lights to flash and its siren to make a screeching sound.  (You can always cut the wire to that screeching siren later and you probably will!)  Now that you have given some particular thought to what it is you are actually looking for, what’s next?

#3        Keep your browser search descriptions specific…  Now that you have exactly what you want in your mind or on a list, how do you best use your favorite search engine to find it?  Now’s the part where I bite my tongue so as not to offer search engine technical information.  KISS!  Now that you have thought about it and actually know what you want, “(a red children’s toy fire engine with working ladder and hoses and flashing lights and loud siren)”, what do you type into that browser search box?  You could just type exactly what’s inside the parentheses above and you would find exactly the link you are looking for.  Now you ask, Do I have to type all of that?  The answer is “No,” you don’t.

#4        Keep your browser search descriptions brief…  Instead of typinga red children’s toy fire engine with working ladder and hoses and flashing lights and loud siren”, try typing “children”s toy fire engines”.  That should be enough of a description to get you in the search engine ballpark.  You won’t get the same “exacting” results but close enough for you to usually find a link to what you really want.  Copy and paste the above two phrases into your browser’s search box separately to see the differences.

You want a wonderful red fire truck to give your kid for his birthday so why not just head on over to the mall?  Surely there is a toy store with exactly what you want.  Oh, I see!  You don’t want to pay mall prices for that red fire truck and you don’t want to burn gas and spend all day looking for it.  Join the crowd.  You wouldn’t be looking for your fire truck online if you weren’t trying to save either time or money or both, would you?

Here is your user friendly, economically viable, money saving tip of the month.

#5        Be sure to use the word “Inexpensive” in your searches…   Forget about that fire truck for now.  Let’s assume you are looking for a simple Holiday or Special Occasion gift or gifts for family members, friends or co-workers and you don’t want to spend a lot of money.  Shopping the Web for gifts is a true adventure.  There can be so many choices.  Narrowing those choices by cost can provide a better experience for gift givers when they can easily discover a unique, quality gift that’s Inexpensive as well.  My Secret… I always type the word “Inexpensive” into my browser in front of the name of the gift I am looking for.  For example, I will type the words Inexpensive Birthday Gifts or Inexpensive Christmas Gifts or Inexpensive Anniversary Gifts.  I know this sounds all too simple but do you do it?  In reality, very few of us add the word “Inexpensive” to our browser searches when we search for products.  Given our current economy, most of us should be taking advantage of this useful, “Inexpensive” trick.  So go to your favorite browser and type Inexpensive Thank You Gifts or type Inexpensive Gag Gifts or type Inexpensive Romantic Gifts or type Inexpensive Get Well Gifts.  Be specific, use the word “Inexpensive“, and you will find exactly the products you are looking for at a price that is easy on your budget.

My motto:  Inexpensive Gifts don’t have to be Cheap… Just Inexpensive!
